2015 a 'challenging' harvest

Due to early spring, a lot of wine was picked and made several weeks early this year. And then came several big Lake County fires. The worst, the Valley Fire, may have created a real problem for the Napa and Lake vineyards.

The large fires in Lake County took 1500 homes and 4 folks died.  This was the 3rd worst fire in California history.  We have started helping several local charities get aid to these families.
This summer proved definitely warmer - some vineyards did great, others not so much. Yields were down by 25% due to the prolonged drought.  The biggest issue for 2015, especially for Lake and Napa counties, was smoke damage to the vineyards.

We haven’t heard ‘much’ as the industry doesn’t want this discussed. But based on what we’ve seen in 2008, we do believe a lot of Napa got significant amounts of smoke.  Sonoma County had a few light smokey days but Napa Valley apparently took a lot more. So we’ll be planning to keep this in mind for our club members.

Lets all send best thoughts and strength to the Lake County fire victims.  Check our website for more charity events.

Guillermo Moran is a 6th generation coffee grower from El Salvador.  He and his partners are bringing 'family direct' coffee from Latin America to Sonoma County!  With their own family-farmed coffee beans, and Guillermo's experience as a roaster, they have created a perfect blend of flavor with true 'farm to table' delivery.  Eco Delight is connecting the coffee lover direct with the farmer, roasting here in Sonoma and delivering direct to Sebastopol.

Tiny Bubbles - like a million of them. or Chaotic bubbling and nonstagnant foams.

Leave it to the French to have a scientist who is paid to count bubbles - in champagne.  Meet G. Liger-Belair, from Equipe Effervescence, Champagne et Applications, Groupe de Spectrométrie Moléculaire et Atmosphérique (GSMA), UMR CNRS 7331, UFR Sciences Exactes et Naturelles, Université de Reims Champagne-Ardenne , BP 1039, 51687 Reims Cedex 2, France.

If you need proof of the French obsession on bubbles - look no further than Mssr Liger-Belair and his dozens of published scientific papers on this critical subject.  Titles like :

Unraveling the evolving nature of gaseous and dissolved carbon dioxide in champagne wines: a state-of-the-art review, from the bottle to the tasting glass.

Is the wall of a cellulose fiber saturated with liquid whether or not permeable with CO2 dissolved molecules? Application to bubble nucleation in champagne wines.

Flow patterns of bubble nucleation sites (called fliers) freely floating in champagne glasses.

CO2 volume fluxes outgassing from champagne glasses: the impact of champagne ageing.

Time to pop one and contemplate.  We recommend Gonet Medefille Blanc du Noirs.  $55 / $46.76 at the shop for members
