Local Means Made Here , Served Here, Enjoyed Here
Our Sebastopol location has its own organic garden, where Chef Rick Vargas and staff grow a lot of the produce and herbs for our special pastas and salads. We source a lot of produce very locally as well - we pickup organic greens from neighbors at Laguna Farm, Greenstring Farm, Permaculture, Asante Farm, Paul's Farm, Randy's Farm are just a few. We make our own bread and pasta from scratch. Our kitchen staff work hard to ensure the highest quality food , where many ingredients come straight from farm to your table.
What would 'Local Grown' mean without hand made wine and local, gourmet cheese? All of our wines and cheeses are bought direct from the producer - we believe 'local' means that we know the people who made the wine, who grew the grapes, who even, yes, milked the cows and goats. We are lucky to have our shop right in the middle of Sonoma County, an important center for this movement of non-commercial, artisan foods and wines. We carry wine from over 100 small wineries and over 80 local cheeses. Check out our Cheese page and our Taste with Our Friends page for more ideas on where to visit while in Sonoma.
Our Sonoma location, on historic Sonoma Plaza, reflects this slow pace - walking around the Plaza, visiting small shops, picnicking, tasting local wine and cheeses - the Plaza has perfected this slower approach to life for over 180 years. You can enjoy your glass of wine right in the middle of the Plaza!
Our wine shop is in the historic 1891 Pinelli Building - where wine was made and sold in 'Victoria Saloon' in the 1890s and cheese was made in the 1920s. (Vella Cheese moved from the Pinelli Building in the 1930s. - you can visit them on 2nd Street East) Now, locally made California cheeses are tasted at La Bodega, paired with local, handmade wines from Sonoma, Napa and Mendocino counties at our wine shop.
Rick's love of sourdough bread means we source organic flour direct from Giusto's - a micro mill in the Bay Area. Can't get fresher spices than from Whole Spice, who has amazing organic spices and herbs from around the world. Eggs can't be more local than Judy's Organic from Petaluma - pick your's up at Skippy's - their farm store. Organic tempeh made at Alive and Healing is fresh and flavorful.
Fircrest Market in Sebastopol deserves special mention and many thanks! - Mark and Dave own this small town market and have created an institution in Sebastopol. Known for their great produce, for us, they travel to San Francisco's Farmers Market to get the freshest greens, onions, herbs, potatoes, kale, leeks, and much much more. At 4:00 am, they buy from farmers from the region and bring this ultra fresh food back to Sebastopol. Thanks again for your great support of our club!
